14 Propositions on the November 2024 Arizona Ballot: What You Need to Know
14 Propositions! The November 2024 Arizona Ballot will be LENGTHY:
Tuesday, October 7 is the deadline for registering to vote (all forms of voting). Check your status and encourage family, friends, and neighbors to check theirs as well. Every vote counts!
This link provides general information about voting dates, deadlines, etc., compiled by Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona (LAMAz.org): 2024 Voting Resources — Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona (lamaz.org)
Early voting begins October 9, so the time to prepare is NOW. To review the propositions, compiled by the Secretary of State, click here.
Some of these 14 measures are contrary to one another, though the ballot titles do not clearly reflect that. Thus, careful preparation is important.
Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona (LAMAz.org) has also compiled the texts of the 14 propositions here, including legislative analyses: https://lamaz.org/news-blog/2024-propositions?ss_source=sscampaigns&ss_campaign_id=66e0bab98. Our friend Autumn Byars, who we met at the August 25, 2024 NJLC worship, worked on several of these informational summaries.
In particular, Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest stands in opposition to Proposition 312. Proposition 312 relates to property taxes. It allows an individual to apply for a refund from a most recent property tax payment if they feel their property value has been affected by a "public nuisance" from individuals experiencing homelessness, and the city did not respond adequately. You can read the draft language here.
LSS-SW believes that Proposition 312 would not benefit the community, its businesses or taxpayers. Rather, loss of tax revenue could reduce the limited resources needed to address the issues this proposition aims to solve. Enforcement of Prop 312 would be difficult and costly. Moreover, the proposition would minimize the dignity and respect that all people deserve.
