On the last Saturday of each month, New Journey worshipers meet at 5:00 p.m. to pray together and complete a service activity. On February 24 we will pack food for the Imagine East Mesa School, a Title 1 school.
On January 26, we packed over 400 bags of food, providing a supply of nutritious food for children when school breakfast and lunch is unavailable on a weekend or school holiday. Many of these children receive school lunches but do not have access to food during the weekends. Food bags were packed with oatmeal, ramen noodles, granola bars, fruit snacks, peanut butter and crackers. Fresh fruit and soup will be included prior to distribution to children on Friday afternoons. Enough bags were packed to provide 106 students weekend food for a month.
Kristen Skiles, daughter of New Journey Lutheran member, Shirley Lundeen, is a teacher at Imagine East Mesa. She is part of the “Giving Gang,” a group of teachers who work to inspire their students to see themselves as future leaders of the world and teach them to approach that role with great respect, integrity and responsibility. New Journey Lutheran’s service project was a way to assist the Giving Gang for a month, with their personal purchasing of food and distribution to students.
